Our Passion for Training

At Good Karma Dog training our mission is to always ensure a humane and ethical experience for both ends of the leash. Through positive reinforcement and compassionate guidance we unlock your dogs potential. We go beyond obedience, building trust and communication that enriches the lives of both dogs and their humans.

We believe every dog deserves to thrive in a positive and nurturing environment. Our methods facilitate creating special bonds between dogs and their families. We utilize what your dog finds valuable in order to build and reinforce long term habits that you want to live with.

Obedience training with us starts with teaching your dog a solid foundation of skills. By not cutting corners we are ensuring they are proficient in multiple environments before we increase the criteria. By the time they are practicing advanced obedience it will be easy to progress because a solid foundation and relationship has already been formed.

  • What does this mean?

Positive reinforcement training methods involve rewarding desired behaviors to increase their occurrence to achieve long term habits. This method is considered effective because it focuses on encouragement and positive feedback while creating a supportive environment that is motivating to repeat desired actions or behaviors. This approach fosters a positive association with the behavior, making it more likely to be sustained over time. Despite popular misconception, once behaviors are learned and proofed, treats (or other reinforcement) are not needed as a bribe for performance. They can however be used as a “payment” system after the skill is performed. Just like with people and working for paychecks, your dog’s schedule of “payment” (or reinforcement) can be varied.

  • Any dog from purebred to rescues and mixed breeds can participate in earning these titles or certificate. All you need is an AKC registration number to have it on record. For more information on how to enroll your mixed breed dog go here or here to register a purebred rescue (or one purchased without AKC papers) with the Purebred Alternative Listing. If you purchased an AKC recognized breed from a breeder your puppy is likely already registered or came with a number so you can do it yourself. Ask your breeder if you’re not sure.

Puppy STAR is a great intro to AKC evaluations for puppies under one year of age. It is also a great first step towards the first Canine Good Citizen evaluation.

Trick Dog Titles are so fun to work towards with your dog! They are a great way to bond and try new things! If your pup earns the Canine Good Citizen Title, they only need 5 tricks for their Novice Title!
